TEDDINGTON PHYSIO AND PILATES - Anne Strong
What is Pilates?

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early twentieth century as a unique series of strengthening, conditioning and flexibility exercises.  It was later adopted by dancers who found that the Pilates focus on core stability, strength and posture fitted in perfectly with their training principles.
More recently Pilates has been used, not only by sports/fitness professionals and rehabilitation experts, but within the wider community as people are now much more aware of the overall benefits of Pilates.  By attending regular one to one or group classes, Pilates can help improve general strength and flexibility with particular emphasis on core muscle control and body alignment.  It can also be used for very specific purposes, for example maintaining muscle control and strength during and after pregnancy, rehabilitation following episodes of back or joint pain.

Pilates classes are available in Teddington on a Tuesday evening for beginner/intermediate matwork pilates and for both ante and post natal pilates.

From October of this year there will be a specific post natal class running at 12.15pm on a Thursday in the same location.  Due to the timing of this class, young babies will of course be welcome too.

Anne has undertaken her Pilates training with the APPI (Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute) which is founded and run by physiotherapists with a specialist interest in muscle imbalance and rehabilitation in both the sporting and general community.

One to one sessions are also available - these are great for specfic rehabilitation programmes, for clients who prefer an individually designed class to accommodate their aims for pilates or if a class is not suitable.

Beginner matwork Pilates

This is a perfect opportunity for those who would like to start some simple but effective muscle strengthening and core stability training on a regular basis with the aim of improving postural alignment and muscle tone.  It is also useful for those people who may have some basic knowledge of Pilates but would like to progress this further to a more intermediate level.  It is perfect for people who may have recently experienced back pain for the first time and are keen to offset this happening again, or for those who experience regular episodes of back pain and would like to improve their strength and flexibility.

Ante / Post natal pilates

During pregnancy the muscles and ligaments are put under strain due to altered weight and significant changes in our hormone levels. Physiologically the body experiences massive changes to its cardiovascular and hormonal systems. This does not however mean that gentle strengthening exercises during pregnancy are contraindicated.  Pilates exercises during pregnancy are specifically designed to adapt to the changing demands on the body.  These exercises can help maintain muscle control and strength during the changing body shape and following birth, can help regain strength and control of those core abdominal and pelvic floor muscles.
Anne has attended specific pilates training courses for this client group as well as courses on general exercise and fitness during pregnancy and post natally.
